When God speaks to us.

As a little girl growing up in the church I would hear people say that God had spoken to them.  I wondered what that would be like… to hear the voice of God.  If he spoke it probably sounded something like James Earl Jones… a deep, echoing voice that would shake you to your bones.  But I determined one thing.  If God talks to people then I wanted him to speak to me too.  This began a life long journey to hearing the voice of God.

The same God who spoke the universe into being is still speaking today and he longs to speak to each of us persistently, personally, powerfully and purposefully.

Psalm 145:18   —  The Lord is near to all who call on him.

As a pastor, the number one struggle that most Christians have is learning to hear and respond to the voice of God.  So many people struggle to really know his voice, what it feels like when he speaks and have the faith to respond to what he says.  We flounder around with inklings of his will unsure about our next step.

He speaks to us because he wants to be known.

Learning to know God’s voice is like getting to know anyone else’s voice, it takes time to develop the relationship.  When my husband and I were first married he used to work late nights and come home when I was asleep. It would startle me and wake me up.  Immediately I would feel fear because I didn’t know who was in my house.  I would listen carefully, with my heart pounding in my chest.  Eventually, I would figure out that it was, in fact, my husband.  As the years went by I’ve become so accustomed to him.  The sounds his feet make and the way the change jingles in his pockets when he comes through the door.  Those sounds don’t scare me anymore, they reassure me, that the one I love is close by.  In the same way, you will become familiar with the voice of God and learn how to sense the slightest spiritual shifts or passing thoughts as his words of comfort for you.

God doesn’t hide, he reveals.

God is not as mysterious and removed as people may think he is.  He is ever present, ever listening and deeply concerned about every detail of your life.  He speaks to us because he loves us and has a deep desire to relate to us the truths about his nature and his ways.  He speaks to reveal.  It’s in his nature to reveal to his children the plans and purposes he has for their lives.  He isn’t keeping things from you.  He carefully and strategically revealing everything to you.

I love to speak about God’s voice of comfort, direction and discernment in our lives.  Here’s the full-length audio message from my home church.  I hope you enjoy it!
