Is it time to get water baptized?

Baptism is an important part of our journey of faith.  It is the public declaration of a decision made deep in our hearts to follow Christ and never look back.  But it’s actually so much more!

Taking the step to be baptized in water is often the first step of faith and obedience that new believers make.  It’s their first opportunity to actually physically do something that God instructs his followers to do.  It requires faith to step out and take the plunge into the waters of baptism.  Everything about it signifies to the world that you are committed to this decision to follow Christ no matter what.  It’s about going all in for Jesus.

But throughout Paul’s teachings in the New Testament, he indicates that there is a deeper and even more significant event that takes place through the act of baptism.  Let’s read a portion of scripture to help us understand.

Romans 6:2-8

We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin— because anyone who has died has been set free from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.

I know that was a big chunk of scripture but stay with me here…

In this passage, Paul is teaching the importance of baptism.  When we are fully submerged underwater, we are identifying with Christ in his death.  Christ’s death was the moment he won the victory over sin.  When we come back up out of the water, we are symbolically raised to a new life in Christ, meaning that through the act of baptism we literally put to death the power of sin in our lives and are empowered to walk in freedom.  Wow. How cool is that!!

Now, I know that it would be awesome to get back up out of the tank and instantaneously have no more sin in our lives.  And I’ve actually seen that happen.  Addictions, broken negative attitudes and fear filled thoughts instantly removed from someone’s life because of their obedience to walk into the waters of baptism.  However, for the most part, after we are baptized we have to learn how to walk in the new life, constantly putting off the deeds of our old life and learning how to walk in the things Christ would want for us.

This process may be difficult at times, but it’s a battle that’s already been won.  If you are still struggling with sin, the enemy would love for you to believe that you will never be free.  That’s a lie.  The act of baptism and the active presence of the Holy Spirit are two powerful forces that help us to live free.
