AUDIO MESSAGE —
Being in church my whole life, I’ve come to realize that most people don’t really understand how the Holy Spirit works. If we are going to be the fully effective church that Jesus envisioned and commissioned, then we need to get comfortable with the topic of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit was sent to us by Jesus in order to help us actually live out the life he died to provide for us. He does this by leading us into the truth and helping us apply it to our everyday lives, so that day by day we become more like Christ in our nature and character. The job of the Holy Spirit first and foremost is to help us produce fruit in our own personal lives.
In fact, Jesus himself said that the way we would be recognized as followers of Christ is because of the evidence of fruit in our lives. He even indicates in this passage of scripture that there will be people who operate in the gifts but have not spent the time developing the relationship with God that produces the fruit… and that is a very dangerous place to be. (read Matthew chapter 7)
We need to be the kind of people who seek the substantial over the sensational.
A quick look at Galatians 5 shows us a list of character traits (fruit) that we would see in the life of someone who is living fully surrendered to the leading of the Spirit. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. The work of the Holy Spirit is to lead us down a path of life that produces these traits in us.
This is the principle I like to call Fruit First. God desires to do something in us so that he can do something through us. Often we are anxious to jump right into doing things for God, but we fail to allow his Spirit to do the adequate work in us first to prepare us for the things he wants to do through us. We have to be careful we don’t get this backwards.
In this teaching session from my home church, I share my thoughts on allowing the Holy Spirit to develop the fruit first in our lives.
