What story are you going to tell?

At the beginning of a new year, it’s worth pausing to think about how the choices and decisions you make today will be the story you tell tomorrow.  Through the story of David and Abigail, we see that there’s great wisdom in stopping to consider what story you want to tell about your life.

In this message we unpack three lessons we learn from Abigail’s conversation with David recorded in 1 Samuel 25.

The first lesson is that a humble position is a powerful position.  When we choose to respond to what is happening around us with gentleness and humility we are actually engaging in spiritual warfare by leaving no room for the enemy to hold on to.  Abigail gets David’s attention and gains his respect by approaching him in humility.  Her gentle and submissive behaviour diffused David’s anger and helped him to listen to reason.

Next we see that Abigail helped David to look at the bigger picture.  She reminded him that there was more to his life and his story than the present moment.  She reminded him of his past victories, how God was keeping and protecting him in his present circumstances, and his calling to be King one day in the future.  She encourages him to. step back and consider his entire story, rather than being narrowly focused on his anger and disappointment in this moment.

Finally, Abigail asks David what story he is going to tell about this day, when he finally becomes King.  Will he regret the decisions and actions he is about to take, or will he be able to look back at this day knowing he acted with grace, love and integrity.  She invites David to consider who he is becoming and the story he wants his life to tell when the promises of God have finally come to pass in his life.  When God has been faithful to fulfill his word, will David be able to say he too was faithful?

These are great questions to ask ourselves and good reasons to stop and think before we act.  What is the story you want to tell about your life at the end of 2020?
