God is not silent.

Categories:

Over the years I’ve often heard people say that God is silent.  It’s one of those things that church people say that never made much sense to me at all.  I’ve always known God as a God who speaks… so why would he choose to be silent?

At one point I even did a dive into scripture to try to find somewhere in the Bible that would back up this idea that maybe, at times God is silent.  I found nothing substantial to back it up.  In fact, what I found was this…

Psalm 50:3  Our God comes and is not silent.

The same God who spoke the world into being is still speaking today.  Over and over throughout the scriptures, chapter after chapter, story after story he is a God who speaks to his people.  It is not God’s nature to be silent and mysterious to pull away or make us search for him.

God does not hide, he reveals.

His heart has always been to reveal his character and nature to his people. He has revealed himself through creation, through scriptures, through the Holy Spirit, but the greatest way he ever revealed Himself was through the person of Jesus.  He chose to send his son into our world so that we in our humanity we could understand him in a more personal and relatable way.

In the middle of the most difficult situations in life, when we are distracted by the chaos and voices around us, it can be difficult to hear God’s voice.  But we must be really careful not to assume that because we can’t hear him, he isn’t speaking.

We are in dangerous territory when we allow our condition to determine our beliefs.

This leads to all kinds of weird theologies and beliefs that just are not true. We must learn to settle what we believe first based on the truth of scriptures, and then approach our circumstances in light of that truth. In your current circumstances, you may feel like God is silent, but it’s simply not true.  He is always speaking.
