God has promised us everything we need to thrive in this life, but it’s our responsibility to come to the table hungry and ready to receive from him.
If my kids come to the table and they are just playing with their food the first I ask is if they are feeling sick.
Sickness can make us lose our appetite for food. In the same sense, there are certain things that can dull our spiritual appetite like unrepentant sin, harbouring bitterness, or holding on to things that aren’t meant to be in our life. We need to be careful to allow God to examine our hearts and help us get those things out of our life in order to keep the lines of communication with God clear and keep us passionately hungry for the things of God.
If sickness isn’t the issue, then I assume my kids have been snacking on foods that are not so good for them.
We can waste a lot of time and energy on things like social media and entertainment that fill our lives with useless noise and ultimately distract us from spending time with God. Even really good things like ministry work and Christian books and tv can be a distraction if we are using them instead of meeting with God at the table personally.
We need to take responsibility for our lives and agendas and be sure to prioritize time spent with God. When we put him first all of the other things we need to do in life seem so much more tolerable and easy to manage. If we leave God to the end of the night or are always trying to fit him in at the last minute we are the ones who ultimately lose out. Try putting a block of time in your calendar each day to spend with God. Whether it’s first thing in the morning while you drink your coffee, your lunch break at work or an after dinner break before any other leisure activities, putting God first will help you deal with all the rest.
Life is busy, I get that… but if you don’t make the time and prioritize time for God in your daily life, everything will suffer. When you are on spiritually everything else that comes at you in a day is much easier to handle.
You can be sure of this, when you do come to the table hungry and eager for more, God will meet with you and fill you up with good things from his word and his presence. He longs to meet with each and every one of us personally and individually but we must learn to come into his presence hungry to meet with him.
