I came across a quote this week in a book by Jim Cymbala. He wrote… “Revival comes when people become dissatisfied with what is and yearn deeply for what could be.”
As I was preparing to speak at revival meetings this weekend I was deeply moved by this quote.
I used to think revival was something that happened around me. When other people changed… or when obstacles that seemed unmovable and situations that seemed impossible suddenly, miraculously changed. When the powerful hand of God swooped down from heaven and made the impossible happen. Like we all just stand back and watch in awe as enemies are destroyed, political atmospheres change and throngs of people turn their hearts over to Jesus.
I’ve come to learn that revival as little to do with what happens around me, but rather it has everything to do with what’s happening within me. I want a Holy dissatisfaction not only with what I see around me … but what I see deep inside my own heart. I yearn deeply for what could be when I am fully surrendered to the work Jesus wants to do in me.
Yes, we long to see good old fashioned revival happen. We want to see it in our cities and in our churches. We want to see revival in our marriages, homes and children. But if I really desire to see change come to all these areas of my life, then I need to get on my knees and allow God to begin that change in me.
Every single time I’ve longed for God to do something amazing in my life it began with a private encounter on my knees.
A moment in time when my surrender met his healing touch and something deep within my own heart was transformed. My perspective shifted and new compassion was birthed. When I allow the healing power of Christ to reach into the deepest places of my own heart, that is when revival really begins.
Today I’m excited to share this message with you. This is my heart for ministry and my approach to my walk of faith. This is everything I want to be and so much more. This is how God heals us, transforms us, moves us forward and uses us for his purposes. This is revival.
I had the opportunity to share this message at Revival Meetings at my home church. Listen to the full-length audio message here.
